Smart and clever adaptation, and a surprisingly solid early non-American noir. Ending is a bit of a surprise for those who know the book!

There's so much that is right with this movie--not least, Richard Attenborough's performance as Pinkie--that I hesitate to mention that I couldn't finish the thing. Quality all around, but the tensions implicit in the narrative are curiously underplayed and, as such, "Brighton Rock" drags. ...Read more

For its time this film about gangsters in Brighton (based on the Graham Greene novel) rmust have seemed shockingly realistic; for contemporary viewers less so.
