old style film noir melodrama

If you don't mind your noir with plot holes, comical fight scenes and much too tidy endings then you may love this.
I liked it OK enough to get to the ending. But I also eat tuna from the can, so take that as you will.

This 1950 film noir thriller has a decent plot and it’s fun to watch but nowadays the pace feels a bit slow and some of the tough guy stuff comes across as more comical than gritty. But still, a fun film that overall I enjoyed.

Wikipedia quotes the review by Time with a rather different tone: "combines a 'perfect crime' plot with some fair-to-middling moviemaking ...".
